A Hand-Built, Site-Fitted Solution by J Johnstone Engineering
We recently completed the design, fabrication, and installation of a bespoke curved steel handrail for a private residence in Thornthwaite, near Keswick, within the Lake District National Park. This made-to-measure handrail was built in mild steel, galvanised for long-term corrosion protection, and powder coated in a classic matt black for a sleek, understated finish.
The handrail was securely fixed into a set of handcrafted stone steps, providing safe, durable access to a raised patio while enhancing the traditional character of the property.

- Formed a smooth, sweeping curve to follow the stone steps
- Fabricated the rail in mild steel
- Applied a hot-dip galvanised finish for rust resistance
- Finished it in matt black powder coat for low maintenance and visual appeal
- Core-drilled and installed the posts directly into the stonework, ensuring strength and longevity

The result is a clean, elegant handrail that looks as if itβs always been there. Strong underfoot, subtle to the eye, and built to last β even in the unpredictable weather of the Lake District.
