Steel Box Section Support Installed for Sandstone Bay Window in Lamplugh, Cumbria

At J Johnstone Engineering, we recently completed the fabrication and installation of a custom steel box section support for a sandstone bay window on a new build property in Lamplugh, Cumbria. This project required precise engineering to ensure the bay window was structurally secure and fully integrated into the building’s modern design, while accommodating traditional masonry materials.

Project Overview

  • Location: Lamplugh, Cumbria
  • Client: New build residential project
  • Scope: Fabrication and installation of box section steel support for sandstone bay window
  • Steel Type: S355 box section
  • Finish: Red oxide primer
  • Compliance: EN1090 Class 2

The goal was to provide a clean, hidden structural solution capable of bearing the weight of the solid sandstone bay, while fitting seamlessly into a modern build schedule and layout.

Why Use Steel Box Section in New Builds?

For new homes using traditional materials like sandstone, modern steel box section offers the perfect balance of strength and simplicity. It allows for:

  • Strong load-bearing support with minimal footprint
  • Straightforward integration into block, brick, or timber frameworks
  • Reliable performance with long-term corrosion resistance
  • Hidden installation that doesn’t compromise external aesthetics

Fabrication Details

The frame was fabricated using S355-grade box section steel in our workshop, to exact measurements taken from architectural drawings and site checks. All work was carried out under our EN1090 Class 2 certification, and the steel was coated with red oxide primer for durability and weather resistance prior to installation.
