J Johnstone Engineering recently completed a custom roof access platform and walkway system for a busy fish and chip shop in Dalston, Cumbria. This permanent access solution allows safe, repeatable inspections of the property’s extraction duct chimney — eliminating the need for costly scaffolding every year.

Previously, the client had to hire scaffolding annually just to access the chimney — a recurring cost and major disruption.
Our solution: a galvanised steel walkway and platform, fabricated in-house and installed with minimal disruption. To keep the yard space accessible for everyday use, the system was designed to work with a removable ladder, which can be stored when not in use — avoiding obstruction and maintaining free movement through the yard.
This approach not only improves safety and convenience, but also saves the client significantly over time.
