In house Fabrication
This project involved the fabrication and installation of structural steelwork for a large new build property located in the Brampton area of Carlisle.
All steelwork was fabricated in-house at J Johnstone Engineering and manufactured in accordance with EN 1090 Execution Class 2, ensuring the required standards for structural steel components used in residential construction.
The steelwork package included a cantilever structure, wind posts, structural posts, and specialist beams to support blockwork and stone finishes.
Cantilever Steel Structure Fabricated In-House
A key element of this project was the cantilever steel structure, fabricated to support the building layout while maintaining clean external lines.
Cantilever steelwork requires:
- Accurate fabrication
- Correct load transfer
- Tight tolerances
- Reliable installation on site
All components were manufactured in-house to ensure consistency and accurate fit during installation.
Structural Steel Beams with Extended Flanges
Several beams on this project were fabricated with extended flanges welded to the underside, allowing them to carry blockwork and stonework above.
This fabrication detail:
- Provides direct support for masonry
- Allows architectural finishes to sit cleanly on the steel
- Reduces the need for additional support systems
- Improves efficiency during the build process
All welding was completed in-house and in line with EN 1090 EXC2 requirements.
Wind Posts & Structural Support Posts
The project also included the fabrication and installation of wind posts and structural posts, which are essential for stabilising masonry walls and supporting the overall structure.
Wind posts are commonly required where:
- Long masonry spans are present
- Open elevations are used
- Additional lateral stability is needed
Each post was fabricated and installed to suit its specific position within the structure.
In-House Fabrication & Quality Control
Fabricating all steelwork in-house allows full control over:
- Dimensions and tolerances
- Welding quality
- Component fit-up
- Preparation for site installation
Working to EN 1090 Execution Class 2 ensures that fabrication processes, welding, and quality checks meet recognised structural standards.
